Now in our day, the naturalistic evolutionists and “critical thinkers” tell us that, not only are these Truths not “self-evident”, they are in fact lies! Yet these Truths form the very foundation of our freedoms.
If in reality, these Truths are illegitimate delusions, then so are the freedoms that are based upon them. And if built upon lies, then neither our freedoms nor our nation can be sustained – both are certain to collapse under a storm of human relativism. And we are, very likely, on the road to slavery (or worse)!
And yet, our founders believed these Truths to be so certain as to be self-evident. Could there really be such a thing as self-evident truth? The founders staked their very lives upon it!
The answer is at hand; isn’t it worth a small investment in time to find out?
The physical universe has not always existed; it had a definite beginning.
Observations from the Hubble Space Telescope, the COBE satellite, and other sources all provide strong evidence that the physical universe is expanding from an initial beginning; a creation event - the so-called Big-Bang.
Scientists also embrace Einstein’s theory of relativity which states that time is only defined within the physical universe of matter and energy. Time does not exist without the physical universe; time also had its beginning at the Big Bang.
The Bible clearly declares God as the Creator of the universe. And in the 4th century, sixteen hundred years before Einstein, Augustine suggested that God, as the Creator, must also be outside of time and space. This is echoed in the Bible (see 2 Peter 3:8b).
Now, since around Darwin’s time, a basic axiom of modern science has been that science explains natural phenomena using only natural laws; i.e. without evoking the supernatural. But the natural laws did not exist before the beginning; they came into being at the “Big Bang” in an extra (i.e. super) natural way.
Scientists examine the present state of the universe and mentally run time in reverse to visualize the state of the universe close to the creation event. But science can only present evidence showing that the universe had a beginning; it cannot identify the method of birthing. Without physical laws or accessibility, explaining the “first cause” or “prime-mover” of the origin requires entering a domain inexplicable by modern science.

On this Father’s Day, 2006, I thought it appropriate to take a few minutes to thank my
father for some things that, by example, he has taught me over the years. Yes, Dad, your children were watching and listening.
Like, for example:
- The importance of family. Indelibly marked on my memory are the many family vacations that we took together when I was growing up. And the times that we spent together on Sundays at your parents. These things helped bind us together as a family, and gave me the desire to pass on this legacy to my girls.
- The importance of being a protector to my family. When we were growing up, we always had the “toughest Dad”, and he was OUR protector and advocate. I want to be that for my kids!
- The importance of being a good provider. We may not have been rich in material things, but we also were never in want. And you and Mom modeled riches to your kids that cannot be bought for any amount of money.
- To stand by the mother of my children. This has been very important in that you passed on ideals that have helped me to face the temptations that are common to all men.
- Your demonstration of strong character. Never once did I see you inappropriately lose control of yourself. Nor did you act deceitfully in your actions towards others. You always strived to be a better example to your kids than the next man.
Dad, you were always a rock. Together, you and Mom provided a source of stability that was priceless and desperately needed by a son who was going through the inner turmoil of youth.
Imperfectly yes. But, by your example, you have modeled many of the attributes of our Heavenly Father. And by seeing you model these attributes, my heart was left open to extending trust to our Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ.
For all of these things I thank you and honor you. Happy Father’s Day 2006 Dad!
