The Spending Addict

The heroin addict’s road to recovery is a nightmarish process.

But in the beginning, the path to addiction is oh so very easy.  A pusher tempts the naive with a “free magic elixir” that will “make you feel so good”!  And the drug really does deliver a pleasure overload, even ecstasy – at first.  For the drug dealer, hooking a meal ticket is the easy part. The trick is find one with the resources to continue paying!  But the promises of the pusher’s poison are a dark and dangerous lie!

HeroinOne of the addict’s first revelations will be that, as his reliance upon the drug deepens, it will require higher and higher amounts to achieve ever-diminishing highs.  Soon the good feelings from the drug will disappear completely.  Yet the deadly drug worm will burrow deep into his soul until it completely owns him.  Without the drug, he cannot even minimally function; starving the deadly worm brings only depression and despair – and the racking pain of withdrawal.

The dependency deepens as the drug tightens its grip.  He must have the drug!  Soon, to get it, the addict will throw away all dignity and self respect.  Funding his habit will consume his family’s finances.  He will beg, borrow, and steal even from close friends to pay for his addiction.  He will take out high-interest loans that he can never repay.  Jobs, friends, family, freedom, and even his hope for the future will be sacrificed upon the alter of the demon worm.  The addict will do anything to get the drug!  He has set his feet upon a road of despair; one leading to poverty, hopelessness, and premature death.  And he will not be denied.

To rescue an addict from this fate is an equally traumatic and dangerous process.  It often fails.  But one thing is sure; if the intervention is not attempted, the victim will perish.

A Rational Pursuit of Truth

ThinkerI wasn’t raised in a Christian home and, except for the rare funeral, I never went to a formal Church service when growing up. In fact, I don’t recall anyone ever sharing their Christian faith with me. But perhaps I wasn’t listening – what interested me was science! I spent my youth fascinated by science and technology. I read a lot of science fiction — I loved Heinlein and Asimov, and was absolutely captivated by the Apollo moon program. I guess you’d have to say that science was my god.In college, I studied for and received a bachelor of science. But after closely examining science’s claims about reality, I became more skeptical.

Judgment Day? On May 21, 2011? At 6pm? Really?

Harold Camping, of “Family Radio” apparently believes and is spreading the word that Judgment DayEnd of Earth will occur on May 21, 2011, when believers will be taken by God from the Earth immediately before He begins His final judgments upon sinful humanity.  Mr. Camping also predicts that the end of the world will finally occur on October 21, 2011.

It is difficult to deny the signs that we may be living in the last days.  Clearly we are living in a time of a great falling away from all things God.  Sin and disbelief in the sacred generally dominates.  We also live in a time of great natural disasters: earthquakes, storms, floods, and the like – certainly beyond anything in my lifetime.  Even my parents – both born during the great depression – also speak of these times as unprecedented in their lifetimes.  The signs of the times certainly appear to fit the general pattern that the Bible says will prevail in the last days.  And the Bible very clearly states that Christ will return to an unprepared world.  We desperately need a great revival to turn the world back to the Truth!

However no matter how sincerely that Mr. Camping believes his message, I strongly question that any person can know with such precision when Christ will return.

Welcome to the Afterlife Osama

There will be much time to analyze the implications of this event. For now, I’d simply like to congratulate the President in bringing Osama Bin Laden to justice. Well done Mr President: to President Obama for closing the deal – but also to President Bush for laying the groundwork.  A nation thanks you!

I’d also like to congratulate Bin Laden on the completion of his move to his new home. Like Zarqawi before him, I hope that he enjoys the embrace of his new wives in “paradise” eternity!  May they give him the infinite comfort and smoldering embraces that he so richly deserves!

As they say, some like it HOT!

The Current Economic Earthquake

Twenty years ago, Larry Burkett published a book entitled “The Coming Economic Earthquake”.  In his book, Mr. Burkett sounded dire warnings about the dangers of runaway US government spending, and the very-great temptation to “monetize” the government debt by purchasing it with money printed for that purpose.

Looking at what is going on with our out-of-control government spending, and the money printing presses that are running at full capacity – it would seem Larry Burkett’s dire prophecies are in danger of being fulfilled.  Exactly what did he predict?

  1. Government spending would grow until it was out of control.  Clearly, this has occurred.
  2. The government would be unable to sell all the debt, so it would be “monetized”; i.e. it would be purchased by new money printed by the Fed for this purpose.  Whatever the reason, this is clearly underway with the Federal Reserve’s “Quantitative Easing” program.
  3. The interest payments required to service the national debt would grow until they exceeded all available tax receipts.  We don’t appear to be here yet, but will this remain true when interest rates begin to rise?
  4. Hyperinflation would be triggered.  People’s savings would be wiped out, and those on fixed incomes would not be able to meet their living expenses.  He noted that this has been the case in EVERY historical example that we have of governments that fund their debts by printing money.

Does Deep Freeze Give the Lie to Global Warming?

Winter Storm

With the deep south now experiencing unprecedented periods of arctic lows – even central and south Florida are dealing with extended icy threats to crops – is it time to question the legitimacy of so-called man-made global warming?

It has been pointed out, on National Geographics’ web site, that even Mars shows evidence of global warming.  If this is true, then it certainly wasn’t caused by humans. Our Sun is a variable star. What role do natural variations in the energy output of the sun play in this story? And if we demonstrate that the Earth is undergoing significant warming on a global scale, then what role has humanity played in causing it? Given media reports in the US, one might think that the debate is settled – but the BBC has reported that there remains serious dissent in the scientific community over global warming.

Battle of World Views

I recently attended a conference on Intelligent Design in CastleRock Colorado with presenters like Stephen Myer, Michael Behe, and David Berlinski.DNA

Dr. Myer was outstanding and presented a high-level summary of his new book “Signature in the Cell”. The textbook-sized volume presents a comprehensive argument that the information in the DNA of the cell could not have arisen through the mechanisms of Darwinism; Darwinism cannot function without the “program code” expressed in the DNA. So far, I have ready through the first 200 pages of this book. After I have completed the next 300+ pages, I will try to post a comprehensive review. So far, it is a deep but compelling read.
